Get To Know The Town Of TauntonTaunton is a city in Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States, located approximately 40 miles south of Boston, 18 miles east of Providence, 10 miles north of Fall River, 20 miles north of New Bedford, and 25 miles west of Plymouth. It is also the seat of Bristol County. Taunton is situated on the Taunton River which winds its way through the city on its way to Mount Hope Bay, 10 miles to the south. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 55,874.
Taunton is the central highway hub of southeasternnMassachusetts. Much of the eastern parts of the state's major highwaysnintersect and/or run through the city, especially at its center. US 44, MA 138,nand MA 140 intersect at Taunton Green, the square at Taunton's center. MA 140nis also accessible from the eastern neighborhood of the city, popularly referrednto as "East Taunton." Additionally, MA 24 and MA 140 intersect nearnEast Taunton, and it is at that junction that Route 140 ceases to be a 2-lanendivided freeway from the south and becomes a smaller state highway to thennorth. Interstate 495 runs through the northern portion of Taunton,nunofficially referred to as "North Taunton", and parallel to MylesnStandish Industrial Park, Taunton's main industrial park. Various smallernroutes run through other parts of the city. These include a small portion of MAn104, close to the Taunton-Raynham city limits, and MA 79, close to thenTaunton-Berkley-Lakeville (Plymouth County) city-town-county limits. Taunton isnthe western terminus of MA 104. It merges into US 44 after entering the city. SeveralnCSX freight rails pass through the city on their way towards Fall River, NewnBedford and a link-up with the line in Middleborough. There are plans beingnworked on to link parts of this rail with the Stoughton line of the MBTAncommuter rail system to Boston. The Greater Attleboro Taunton Regional TransitnAuthority, or GATRA, provides bus mass transit. Taunton has its own municipalnairport, serving mostly smaller craft and occasional commuter jets. The nearestnairport with national airline service is T.F. Green Airport in Rhode Island,nand the nearest international service is at Logan International Airport innBoston.n
